Ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging tool that allows our veterinary team to examine your pet’s internal organs in real time. Unlike X-rays, which are best for evaluating bones and dense structures, ultrasound provides detailed images of soft tissues, making it an invaluable diagnostic tool for many medical conditions.
At Englehart Animal Hospital, ultrasound can help evaluate a variety of conditions, including:
- Liver, kidney, spleen, and bladder disease
- Gastrointestinal concerns such as vomiting or diarrhea
- Abdominal masses or fluid
- Urinary tract conditions
- Pregnancy confirmation and monitoring
- Certain heart and soft tissue abnormalities
- Guidance for diagnostic procedures, such as fine-needle aspirates
What to Expect
Ultrasound is a painless procedure, and most pets tolerate it very well without sedation. To obtain the clearest images, a small area of your pet’s fur may need to be clipped, and a special ultrasound gel is applied to the skin.
In some cases, light sedation may be recommended if your pet is anxious or uncomfortable, allowing the examination to be completed safely and accurately.
